Drop The Puck Already!!

While I realize there are not many readers of this blog who happen to be hockey fans, with even fewer being Detroit Red Wing hockey fans, I'm considering running an open-thread during tonight's game, commencing with the 2nd Period (around 9 PM EST). Feel free to join in!

If Detroit wins tonight's game, they will have won the Stanley Cup for the second year in a row, defeating Pittsburgh yet again to remain NHL Champions. I know, I know, it means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things, but with the rotten economy and all the bad news and the atrocious football team that runs around Ford Field in downtown Detroit, a Red Wings victory would provide a psychological boost to the area.

Another reason why I want them to close out the series tonight is because I won't be able to watch Game 7 Friday night.

If you're inspired to pray, please consider this prayer or perhaps this one.

So GO WINGS!!! Bring home the Cup!!

8:51 PM - 1st period over, no score. Play's pretty even. NBC has serious man-love for Sydney Crosby. Maybe they should get a room...

9:07 PM - Early 2nd period - Pittsburgh scores first goal, by Jordan Staal.

9:11 PM - I think I just saw Pierre McGuire wink at Crosby.

9:17 PM - Game pace is okay, but Wings need to shoot the puck more. 7 shots thru the 6 minute mark of the 2nd period ain't gonna do it.

9:19 PM - Another non-call against the Wings - Cooke pastes Datsyuk after having played the puck. So where's the interference call??

9:24 PM - Penguins blocking a lot of shots - Wings have to stop waiting for the "perfect" shot...

9:24 PM - Angela M. comments that her husband is rooting for the Penguins. I don't like him very much all of a sudden...

9:33 PM - Holmstrom just missed on a heart just restarted a couple seconds later. Where's my defibrilator?

9:39 PM - Zetterberg just clanged one off the post, and Fleury sat on the rebound. So close to tying up the game!!

9:41 PM - Second period over, 1-0 Pittsburgh. Osgood made some crucial saves in the last 30 seconds. I don't know if my heart can take another period of this...

10:00 PM - Start of the 3rd period. I think NBC is already making travel plans back to Detroit.

10:04 PM - Wings get three quick shots, Fleury makes three quick saves. Getting closer.

10:07 PM - Penguins make it 2-0, on a stuff by Kennedy. Should I get worried yet? 14:30 left in the game. It all depends on which team scores the next goal...

10:12 PM - All right!!!! It's a one goal game as Kris Draper bangs home a rebound to make it 2-1. 12:00 minutes left in the game, and it's a one-shot game. Yeah!!!

10:15 PM - First Red Wings power play for Detroit, as Malkin goes in the box for a cross-check. Great chance to tie the game. Of course, it's not the first penalty against the Penguins, just the first one that was called.

10:19 PM - No powerplay goal, but good pressure. 8:00 minutes to go.

10:21 PM - Okay, another powerplay for the Wings. Guerin highsticks Draper. Another chance to tie this game up. I think I'm going to hyperventilate - where's my oxygen??

10:25 PM - Darn - no powerplay goal this time either, and Osgood just made a great save to keep the game 2-1. Deep breaths, LarryD, deep breaths.

10:31 PM - 2:30 left to go. Getting antsy here...

10:32 PM - Ohhh man! Fluery stoned Cleary on a breakaway! Now there's 1:12 left in the game, face-off deep in the Penguins' zone, and the Wings are pulling Osgood for a sixth attacker. This is what playoff hockey is all about. I just wish the NBC announcers would mention once that the Penguins have an opponent...

10:35 PM - Here we go - last minute to play, trying to get the tying goal....

10:36 PM - 30 seconds left....mad scramble in front....a shot...a goal....13.2 seconds left....

10:38 PM - One last shot, one last save, and the Penguins win 2-1. Shoot.

Well, back to Detroit for Game 7. I'll be firing up the DVR Friday night.
