This provides closure for those who had family members and friends killed on 9/11 and the other numerous terrorist attacks orchestrated by that man. Justice has been served. There's one less evil dude in the world to contend with, and while it remains to be seen how much of an impact his death will have on the overall War on Terror, there's a certain amount of grim satisfaction to be realized over the result of yesterday's Navy SEAL operation.
So kudos to the military and intel groups. It is a victory in the ongoing War on Terror, and no American troops injured or killed, either.
But - I'm really disappointed about the 'Dancing in the Streets' reactions - more than disappointed, actually. I thought we were better than this. It's over the top and disproportionate. And when I read where some want to declare a holiday (NB: graphic image of dead OBL, with head gunshot wound. So if you're squeamish, you've been warned), I have to shake my head and wonder. The guy reaped what he sowed - but it's no reason to turn malicious and petty.
As an American, I'm relieved to be reading OBL's obituary. As a Catholic, I'm tempering my relief with the realization that he has just stood before God and received his due - as all of us will, someday. As difficult as it may be, I need to pray for the repose of his soul. And ask for God's mercy upon my own.
note - The Vatican has issued a statement on the death of bin Laden, urging a deeper sense of reflection on the part of Christians, rather than rejoicing:
“Osama bin Laden, as we all know, bore the most serious responsibility for spreading divisions and hatred among populations, causing the deaths of innumerable people, and manipulating religions to this end,” Father Lombardi said.“In the face of a man’s death, a Christian never rejoices, but reflects on the serious responsibilities of each person before God and before men, and hopes and works so that every event may be the occasion for the further growth of peace and not of hatred,” the spokesman said.
There are reports coming from Pakistan that Christian schools and churches are on high alert for fear of retaliation. Keep them in your prayers.
